Belmond Group and the UK based SRA (Sustainable Restaurant Organisation) have been speaking about their collaboration to assess the sustainability of the groups 30+ worldwide hotels, as well as its rail and river cruises.
The massive undertaking took place earlier on this year after assessment forms were handed out to all General Managers at their yearly conference in South Carolina. The questionnaires were translated into 10 different languages so hotel managers from Koh Samui to Italy could complete the SRA assessment to evaluate current performance, and set future goals for improving sustainability.
The process hi-lighted how difficult it can be to meet sustainability guidelines, such as on the Belmond Royal Scotsman train experience, where such close confines present the biggest challenges. All the groups sites did feedback that they have gained valuable awareness from the process, Belmond El Encanto have now introduced strict water conservation guidelines due to the current Californian drought conditions.
