A record ruling by the Food and Drug administration (FDA) in the USA has allowed genetically modified salmon to enter the food chain, classing them as safe to eat. The ruling comes after 20 years of development and research by USA based biotech company AquaBounty Technologies.
Although the FDA approval has cleared the salmon as being safe for consumption the Centre for Food Safety has said that it will challenge the decision as it feels the FDA has ‘’neglected it’s responsibility to protect the public’’.
The majority of USA citizens don’t support the introduction of GM foods, over 1.8 million people opposed passing the licence for GM salmon and 7 out of 10 Americans have said they are more likely to buy products if they are labelled as being GM free.
The people fighting for GM products are quick to point out that the introduction of GM salmon means healthy, nutritious food for everyone at a fair cost without impacting on the environment and overfishing the seas.
